MBAs are a Family Affair

In 1980, when Jim and Sheryl Wotherspoon founded Beaumont, Alberta-based Cheyenne Tree Farms Ltd., a retail and wholesale supplier of trees, shrubs and perennials, a university would have been the last place for them to turn to for programs and education specifically designed for family businesses. But a couple of years ago, when the husband/ wife team were looking for insights to help them with their business, the first place they turned to was the University of Alberta’s Alberta Business Family Institute. There, they enrolled in The RoadMap Program for Entrepreneurial Families, which covers such topics as strategies for growth and change, establishing boundaries between family, identifying appropriate governance structures, effective conflict resolution and leadership continuity as well as business succession planning.
