Abstract

The integration of health services across organizational and professional boundaries is widely agreed to be desirable to ensure the quality, continuity and accessibility of care. This preoccupation is reflected in restructuring initiatives around the notions of networks, partnerships and interdisciplinary teams. However, the integration of health services is not just a question of structure. It requires the implementation of new ways of working and collaborating. In this panel, two researchers and a consultant will discuss their observations concerning approaches to achieving successful integration based on case studies and experiences in Alberta and Quebec.

Summary

Every advanced society needs to control the cost of health care while making it more broadly available. Most find themselves struck in a tradeoff between access and affordability, leading to contentious political give and take. This needn’t be the case. A scattered few provider organizations and systems have learned to manage the delivery of care in a more sophisticated fashion, taking lessons from some of the world’s most successful organizations. The results have been stupendous, with breakthrough advances in quality, cost, and access. What they’ve done, why its worked, and what others can do to match their results will be discussed.

Abstract

Change and innovation do not just happen. Good ideas, ingenious service delivery models or novel technologies are all necessary, but not sufficient in themselves to create benefit for people, organizations and society. Across various sectors, leaders are realizing that achieving transformation requires more than supporting others in their efforts to implement change and innovation. Leaders in the health sector are especially astute to what it takes to achieve transformation since there is much at stake in failed efforts. Indeed, successfully instituting innovation in care delivery or even greater hand hygiene compliance can literally mean the difference between life and death for patients. In this session, we will draw on extensive field research in both Canadian and US health organizations to show how some leaders are taking a different view of how they promote innovation and change. We call this “cultivating” change and innovation because these leaders are mindfully bestowing their attention and dedicating their activity to growing innovation and change. What they emphasize and what “cultivating” looks like in their everyday practice will be explored.
