Rethinking Innovation for the 21st Century: Putting People in the Picture

It has become increasingly clear that innovation is driven by people—their viewpoints and knowledge. At the heart of this appreciation of “human capital” is an understanding of the importance of a strong civil society with a sophisticated capacity for global engagement, and of having a robust array of policies and institutions to underpin domestic and international initiatives.

We no longer see the economic growth arising from innovation as producing successful societies in a linear way; rather, we see such growth as resulting from and interacting with successful societies in multidimensional ways to make them even more successful. In Canada, universities hold a central place in research and innovation by supporting talented people; often it is these researchers behind the innovations that foster Canada’s economic growth.

By investing in people, their ideas and their intellectual capacity, and by creating a strong network of human capital, we will best position Canada as a leader in innovation and economic growth.
