Titre: Social Innovation in Contested Domains: Insite – North America’s First Government Sanctioned Supervised Injection Site

Invité: Tom Lawrence, Simon Fraser University

Social innovation is has gained a great deal of attention as an important mechanism through which communities can address their social problems. Despite widespread popular and political attention, scholarly understanding of social innovation is in its infancy. In this paper, I explore social innovation in contested domains by exploring the case of Insite, North America’s first government sanctioned, supervised injection site for users of illegal drugs. I adopt an institutional perspective, from which social innovation is conceptualized as the production and institutionalization of a novel solution to a social problem. Drawing on my findings, I develop a theoretical model of social innovation in contested domains that describes an iterative process with the status of the innovation evolving from being a nascent concept to a proto-institution to an institution, and each stage associated with a new field configuration in which the discourse, social structures, and practices of the field are aligned in a way that supports the transition.

This paper reconsiders the creativity-control tension in light of a broader perspective on creativity informed by the sociology of arts. We consider the thick collective, institutional, and social dimensions of creativity to broaden the scope of the creativity-control discussion. In so doing, we seek to uncover modes of management of the creativity-control tension that have been neglected to date. Our research is based on an artists’ squat located in Paris that for the past ten years has struggled to establish and maintain its existence—the Théâtre de Verre. This extreme case of collective artistic creativity brings to light the way in which creativity-control tensions cross over the individual, organizational and institutional levels of analysis. Our findings show how the artist-squatters balanced these tensions like seesaws in order to maintain their artistic creativity. Specifically, our results point to five fulcra that facilitate the management of the creativity-control seesaws: shared beliefs, boundaries, risky improvisation, organizational nomadism, and symbolic calculation. We show how these fulcra stabilize or destabilize the balance between the search for collective creativity and institutional and organizational pressures for control.

Talk, text and tools in the practice of strategy
First International Strategy as Practice Workshop in North America
August 5, 2010, HEC Montréal, Canada

In 2010, the Academy of Management Meeting will be held in Montréal (August 6-10), a city that is also home to the first research group on strategy as- practice to be established in North America. This is thus the perfect occasion for the GéPS (Groupe d’études sur la pratique de la stratégie/ Strategy as Practice Study Group) to invite you to a special event to be held at HEC Montréal, immediately preceding the AOM meeting. This workshop is intended as an opportunity to take stock of recent SAP research and consider new directions.

So far, SAP scholars have explored the question of what strategists “do”, providing at least three different types of answers to this question: strategists talk, they write texts and they use various kinds of tools—models, methodologies, etc. The pervasiveness of ethnographic research in the area has led to a predominance of studies dealing with strategic talk and agency. There is still realtively little research on the production and use of texts and tools; we believe that there is a need to bring to the fore the textual, intertextual and material aspects of strategy as practice. In addition, research on the connections between talk, texts and tools would be very welcome: how do managers talk about texts and tools? How are texts and material objects mobilized during the flow of conversations? How do strategists “textualize” their conversations and their use of tools? How are the choice and usage of tools related to other aspects of the practice of strategy? And finally, what are the best methodologies for answering these questions?

For information on the workshop and to register, go to the special workshop website

http://web.hec.ca/geps/talktexttools/index.html

The workshop is co-sponsored and organized by the Chaire de recherche du Canada en gestion stratégique en contexte pluraliste.
